Excitement was in the air at the groundbreaking ceremony for the 5-screen Cinemark Theatre in October at The Dunes Shopping Center on Monterey Bay in Marina, California. Prior to addressing the crowd in attendance, Mayor Bruce Delgado got down on his hands and knees and kissed the dirt to celebrate the start of this long-awaited project.
This new high-tech theater will be located adjacent to Best Buy and in the same center with REI, Kohl’s, and Old Navy, and it is scheduled to open in the summer of 2015, just in time for the blockbuster season. Moviegoers at the new facility can count on the theater to have high-end digital projection, and every auditorium will offer wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-floor screens.
“We expect all this to create a regional draw,” said Mayor Delgado.
Cinemark is a domestic and international motion picture exhibitor. It operates 486 theaters with 5,595 screens in 40 U.S. states, plus Brazil, Argentina and 11 other Latin American countries, and has partnered with Shea Properties for this project.
“The real winners from the theater will be our citizens,” Mayor Delgado said. “It’s a university town, and you can’t have one of those without a theater.”

In addition to the new theater, two new Shea Homes communities have also started construction at The Dunes. Sea House and Surf House communities are well underway, and model homes are expected to open in late February 2015. Sea House is a collection of 105 duet-style homes ranging from 1,523 to 1,896 square feet, while Surf House is a collection of just 92 new single family homes ranging from 1,928 square feet to 2,158 square feet.
